Guide

How to monitor website changes after an update

To monitor website changes after an update, save a baseline of the pages and values that matter before you update, then let scheduled checks compare the site against it. TLDTrack does this with visual monitors for what visitors see, content checks for the page source, and the WordPress plugin for what changed in the admin.

01 · Before

Before you update

01

Pick the pages that matter

The homepage, your main service or product page, the contact form and the checkout. These are where a broken update costs the most.

02

Watch what must not change

The header and menu, the hero, the form, the basket. The first capture becomes your baseline, and saving it uses no credits.

03

Watch the values, not just the look

Use element monitors for a phone number, a price or a button that must stay on the page.

04

Check the source

Content checks confirm Google Tag Manager, meta tags, the HTTPS redirect and your security headers are still in place.

02 · After

After the update

Visual

Layout and content

Visual monitors compare each page with its baseline at their next check, hourly to weekly. A change above 1% of the watched area raises an alert with before, after and difference images.

Source

Tags, meta and headers

Content checks run on each rule's schedule, from hourly to weekly. They can also be run straight after an update, so you see the result there and then.

WordPress

What changed in the admin

With the TLDTrack plugin, each plugin update raises an alert with the old and new version, so you can match a broken page to the update behind it.

Uptime

Is the site still up?

Uptime is checked every 5 minutes, and every minute once a check fails.

Speed

Did it get slower?

A weekly PageSpeed run on mobile and desktop, with an alert if the score falls below the minimum you set.

03 · Expected changes

When the change is meant to happen

Most updates change something on purpose. Accept the change as the new baseline from the monitor, and later checks compare against the updated page.

Hourly visual checks use about 720 visual credits a month per monitor, so save them for the pages you update most and use daily checks elsewhere.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can TLDTrack check a page straight after I update?

Content checks can be run straight away from the dashboard. Visual monitors check on their schedule, which can be as often as hourly.

What if I run the updates from TLDTrack?

Updates you send from the dashboard report success or failure back, and a failed update raises an alert. Your visual monitors and content checks then pick up any change on the page.

How do I stop alerts for changes I meant to make?

Accept the change as the new baseline. For pages that change often, watch a smaller area or a single element instead.

Does this use credits?

Each visual check uses one visual credit. Content checks, uptime checks and the WordPress plugin use none.
