Alerting & escalation

Alerts that reach the right person

A monitoring alert is only useful if someone sees it. TLDTrack delivers alerts by email, SMS, mobile push, Slack, Microsoft Teams and signed webhooks, filters each destination by category and severity, and escalates a critical alert that nobody opens.

01 · Channels

Six ways an alert can reach you

Alerts reach connected channels within about a minute of being raised. Connect as many destinations as you need.

Email

Every alert, to every contact who opted in. Included on every plan.

SMS

Text messages for the alerts that cannot wait, to UK mobile numbers. Optional add-on paid for with prepaid SMS credits, available on paid plans.

Mobile push

Push notifications through the TLDTrack iOS and Android apps. Included on paid plans.

Slack

Point an incoming webhook at a channel and alerts arrive where your team already works.

Microsoft Teams

Connect a Teams workflow webhook and alerts post straight into the channel you choose.

Signed webhooks

A JSON POST to any URL you control, signed with an HMAC SHA-256 signature header your code can verify. Pipe alerts into your own tooling.

Each destination has its own filter: choose which alert categories it receives and set a minimum severity, so the ops channel gets everything and a quieter channel only gets critical alerts.

02 · Escalation

If nobody opens it, we escalate it

Critical alerts sent at 2am get missed. Escalation is the safety net, available on paid plans and off until you switch it on.

01

A critical alert fires

It goes out on every channel you have connected, within about a minute of being raised.

02

The clock starts

If nobody opens it within your window, anywhere from 5 to 120 minutes, 15 by default, TLDTrack treats it as unseen.

03

Escalation contacts are told

The alert is re-sent once, by email, SMS and your connected channels, to the contacts you mark for escalation who receive that type of alert. If nobody is marked, it goes to every contact who receives that type.

03 · Who gets what

The right alerts to the right people

Channels decide where alerts go. The notifications matrix decides who gets which ones.

Per-contact opt-ins

Each contact on your account has their own row in the notifications matrix: tick the alert categories they should receive, leave the rest unticked. The developer gets DNS and SSL, the account manager gets downtime and renewals.

Per-category control

Uptime, SSL, DNS, content, visual, email health, security and the rest are separate categories, so opting into one never signs you up for the others.

Severity filters per destination

A Slack channel can take everything from info upwards while SMS only fires on critical. Set the minimum severity on each destination independently.

Escalation contacts

Mark who gets the second nudge when a critical alert goes unopened. They still receive the alert types ticked for them as normal.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which channels can TLDTrack alert on?

Email on every plan. Paid plans add SMS to UK mobile numbers and mobile push via the iOS and Android apps. Starter, Pro and Agency can also deliver alerts to Slack (incoming webhook), Microsoft Teams (workflow webhook) and any URL you control via a signed webhook. SMS is an optional add-on paid for with prepaid credits.

How fast do alerts arrive?

Alerts reach connected channels within about a minute of being raised.

How does TLDTrack connect to Slack or Teams?

Through an incoming webhook in Slack or a workflow webhook in Teams. Each destination receives only the alert categories and severities you choose for it.

How do I verify a webhook really came from TLDTrack?

Every webhook delivery is a JSON POST signed with an HMAC SHA-256 signature header. Recompute the signature with your signing secret and compare; if they match, the payload is genuine and untampered.

How does escalation work?

Escalation is optional and off until you switch it on, on paid plans. Once it is on, if nobody opens a critical alert within your window, from 5 to 120 minutes with a default of 15, TLDTrack re-sends it once to the contacts you mark for escalation who receive that type of alert, or to every contact who receives it if you have marked nobody, by email, SMS and your connected channels.

Can different alerts go to different places?

Yes, twice over. Each channel destination filters by alert category and minimum severity, and each contact has per-category opt-ins in the notifications matrix, so people and channels each get exactly the alerts they signed up for.
