How to monitor WordPress updates across your sites

To monitor WordPress updates across several sites, have each site report its plugins, themes and core version to one place. The free TLDTrack plugin does this twice a day and after every update, so you can see what is waiting, get an alert when a plugin is updated, and run updates from the dashboard.

01 · Steps

Setting it up

01

Add your sites

TLDTrack spots WordPress from the outside, so you can see which of your sites run it.

02

Install the free plugin

It sends its first report as soon as it is connected to your account, then twice a day and after every update.

03

See what is waiting

Each site lists the plugin, theme and WordPress updates available for it.

04

Run the updates

Queue updates for a site and the plugin runs them through WordPress's own updater, then reports success or failure.

02 · Alerts

What raises an alert

Updated

A plugin is updated

The alert shows the old and new version, so a broken page can be traced to the update behind it.

Changed

A plugin is installed, removed, activated or deactivated

Whoever made the change, and however they made it.

Failed

An update you sent fails

The site reports the failure back and you get an alert.

Admins

An admin account appears

A critical alert, since an admin you did not add can mean someone else has access.

03 · After

Checking the site after updating

An update can change how a page looks or drop a tag without breaking anything outright. Put visual monitors on the pages that matter and content checks on the tags you rely on, and TLDTrack compares the site after the update with the version you approved. Our guide to monitoring changes after an update covers the set-up.

Dashboard updates need plugin version 3.3.0 or later. A site that asks for FTP details before installing updates cannot use them.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I see which sites need a WordPress core update?

Yes. Each site's report shows whether a WordPress core update is waiting, alongside its plugin and theme updates.

Are theme updates covered?

Theme updates waiting are listed and can be run from the dashboard. Switching or changing a theme does not raise an alert.

Can I update every site at once?

Updates are queued site by site, with up to 20 waiting for each site at a time.

Do I have to run updates through TLDTrack?

No. Update however you normally do. The plugin reports the change either way.

Is the plugin free?

Yes. The plugin costs nothing to install and reports to your TLDTrack account.
