Guide

How to detect unexpected website changes

To detect unexpected website changes, save an approved version of what matters on each site and check it on a schedule, so any difference raises an alert. TLDTrack watches the look of a page, the values on it, its source, the domain's DNS and the WordPress admin.

01 · Causes

Where unexpected changes come from

A client edits a page

Prices change, a section is deleted, the phone number gets a typo.

An update goes further than planned

A plugin or theme update moves the layout, drops a tracking tag or puts a setting back to its default.

Someone else gets in

A new admin account appears, a page is defaced, the DNS points somewhere new.

A tag changes

A tracking ID is swapped for another, or a tag disappears in a redesign.

02 · Checks

What to watch, and how

Look

Visual monitors

Compare an area of a page with your approved baseline, hourly to weekly. Alerts show before, after and difference images.

Values

Element monitors

Watch one price, phone number or button by its CSS selector. Alert on any change, or only when a price crosses a value you set.

Source

Content checks

A check, hourly to weekly, that a keyword, tag or header is still there, that placeholder text has not gone live, and that the homepage is not blocked from search.

Tags

Tracking codes

With the TLDTrack snippet on the site, you are told when a tracking code is added, removed or changes ID.

Domain

DNS records

A, AAAA, MX, NS, CNAME and TXT records are read every few hours, and an alert names any record added or removed.

Admin

WordPress

With the free plugin, you get alerts when plugins change or an admin account is added or removed.

03 · Noise

Keeping false alarms down

  • Visual monitors only alert when more than 1% of the watched area changes.
  • Ads, videos and other embedded frames are hidden during visual checks.
  • Watch a single element rather than an area with a rotating banner in it.
  • Accept an intended change as the new baseline in one click.
  • Mute DNS alerts for record types you change often.
  • Describe the change you care about in plain English, and an AI model checks each real change against it.

04 · Pricing

Simple, transparent pricing

Every paid plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Cancel during the trial and you won't be charged.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can TLDTrack tell me who made a change?

No. It tells you what changed and when it was spotted. On WordPress sites, the plugin alerts also show what changed in the admin, such as a plugin update or a new admin account.

How quickly will I find out?

It depends on the check: visual monitors as often as hourly, DNS every few hours, content checks on the schedule you set for each rule, and WordPress plugin changes as soon as the plugin reports them.

Will it alert me when any text on the page changes?

Not across the whole page. Pick the areas or elements that matter and TLDTrack alerts when those change.

Does it work on any platform?

Visual monitors, content checks and DNS alerts work on any website. The admin alerts need WordPress and the free plugin.
