SPF monitoring

SPF monitoring that tells you when the record changes

SPF monitoring watches the DNS record that lists who may send email for your domain. TLDTrack reads every domain's TXT records every few hours and alerts you when the SPF record changes, showing the exact record that was added or removed.

01 · Steps

How it works

01

Add your domains

TLDTrack reads public DNS. There is nothing to install and it needs no access to your mail server.

02

It saves the current record

The first time TLDTrack reads a domain's TXT records, it stores them as the starting point without sending an alert.

03

It checks again every few hours

Each run reads the TXT records through Google's DNS, falling back to Cloudflare's. A lookup that fails keeps the stored value, so a DNS hiccup never looks like a deleted record.

04

You see exactly what changed

When the SPF record changes, the alert shows the old record removed and the new one added. It goes to the account owner and admins by email, to the mobile app, and to Slack, Teams or a webhook if you use them.

05

A daily strictness check

Once a day TLDTrack also checks the record is still there and still strict. If it disappears, or changes to let anyone send with +all or ?all, you get an alert.

02 · Checks

Checks you can run any time

Health check

Is the record there, and strict enough?

The email health panel flags a missing record, a +all or ?all that lets anyone send, and a record with no all at the end.

Email test

Does SPF pass on real mail?

Send a message to a one-time test address and TLDTrack reports whether SPF passed, and tells a permanent error apart from a fail. It counts the DNS lookups at the top level of your record, warns as you near the limit of 10, spots repeated mechanisms and IP addresses broken by a stray space, and writes a corrected record you can paste in.

Free tool

Check any domain

The free email deliverability test runs the same test without an account.

03 · Why it matters

How SPF breaks

When SPF fails, mail still sends. It just starts landing in spam, and you hear about it from the client.

Someone adds a new sender

A newsletter tool, a CRM, a helpdesk. Each one needs adding to SPF, and every edit is a chance to break the record.

Two records, or none

A second SPF record, or a deleted one, makes SPF fail for every message from the domain.

Too many lookups

SPF allows 10 DNS lookups. Go over and receiving servers treat the record as an error.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

How often does TLDTrack check SPF?

The TXT records that hold SPF are read every few hours, and the record is checked for strictness once a day. You can also run the health check or an email test any time.

Who gets SPF change alerts?

The account owner and admins by email, plus the mobile app and any Slack, Teams or webhook destination you have set up.

Can I mute alerts for TXT records I change often?

Yes. DNS alerts can be muted by record type, for all your domains or for one. Muted records are still tracked.

Does it check DKIM and DMARC too?

Yes. The daily check also alerts when a DKIM key at one of 21 common selectors is removed or added, and when a DMARC record is removed or its policy changes.

Does the lookup count follow includes?

No. It counts the lookups at the top level of your record, and each include can add lookups of its own.
